Statice

Let's start with what the difference is, because Limonium and Statice are terms often used interchangably. The confusion surrounding statice and limonium stems from their shared botanical classification. Both belong to the genus "Limonium", which encompasses a wide variety of flowering plants. However, the term “statice” has become a common, albeit somewhat informal, name for this group of plants. This is largely due to the popularity of "Limonium sinuatum", often referred to as “statice,” as a cut flower and dried floral arrangement staple. Both to retain their vibrant colors and textures even after drying making them a truly long-lasting and low-maintenance floral option, and are grown in the same way, so we cover them together in our guide.

Sow seeds onto the surface of good free draining seed compost and lightly cover the seed with a sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator, sealed polythene bag or a warm place until after germination which usually takes 10-21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into pots or trays.

Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm apart, or into plant pots and containers for a stunning patio display.

A tender perennial, Limonium will over-winter in mild conditions and established plants can be divided is required in spring

TOP TIP

With strong stems and bright flower heads, they are perfect for preserving. To preserve flowers for the Winter, cut stems just before flowers are fully open, hang small bunches upside down in a cool ventilated area. The bright colour of the flowers will remain, whilst the stems dim to a golden colour.
