Echium’s are perfect for adding a touch of drama to both exotic and cottage garden settings, as well as a large greenhouse or conservatory. Tall spikes of intense blue blooms are borne on strong branching stems in spring and summer, which are a delight to pollinators, as well as us.
Sow Echium seeds on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down and cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination. Keep the compost moist but not wet. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 9cm pots and grow on through the winter in a sheltered spot making sure they don’t fully dry out.
Plant out in April/May at a distance of 30cm apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun. If you intend to keep the plant as a perennial in cooler regions you may need to protect the roots from frost or move under glass for winter.
TOP TIP
Despite its origins in it is hardy to -5° and can survive British winters unless grown in wet soil. A short-lived perennial, it’s typically grown as a biennial in the UK. Yet, as in its native Madeira, in milder regions of the UK it can grow into a small tree, and can self-seed readily.
CAUTION: Echiums are a skin irritant and can be toxic to pets if eaten. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling
